The back-to-school season is full of fresh starts—but before diving into curriculum, I always begin with getting to know you activities. Building strong relationships from day one helps me connect with students personally and academically. When I understand their interests, strengths, and struggles, I can better engage them in the classroom all year long.
Why These Activities Matter
Taking time to learn about your students isn’t just feel-good fluff. It helps you:
Build trust and connection early
Choose topics and materials that match their interests
And yes, these icebreakers double as writing assessments, relationship builders, and conversation starters. Win-win.
Activity Spotlight: Three Things I Want My Teacher to Know
One of my favorite first-week and getting to know you activities is “Three Things I Want My Teacher to Know.” Students write about anything they’d like to share—fun facts, hobbies, family life, or challenges they’ve faced.
This activity helps you:
Understand student voice and background
💬 Tip: I always model the activity by sharing my own 3 things — it sets the tone and shows students they can be real with me.
